A tall, planted arboreal home
Chahoua geckos are arboreal omnivores from New Caledonia that thrive in a tall, humid, planted enclosure — an 18"x18"x24" front-opening terrarium suits a single adult. They appreciate sturdy cork bark and broad-leaf plants for cover.
Their prehensile tail and strong climbing ability mean vertical space and varied perch thicknesses matter. Provide cork tubes, thick branches, and live or silk foliage to create a layered canopy.
Temperature, humidity and UVB
Chahoua do well at room temperature — 72–78°F with a warm spot no higher than 82°F. A ceramic heat emitter on a thermostat is only needed if the room drops below 70°F.
Keep humidity between 60–80%, misting in the evening and letting it dry during the day. Low-level arboreal UVB (Arcadia ShadeDweller 2.4%) supports D3 synthesis and a natural day/night cycle.
Diet and feeding
A complete powdered gecko diet (CGD) such as Pangea or Repashy is the staple — offer it fresh every 24–48 hours on a magnetic feeding ledge.
Once or twice a week, offer gut-loaded feeder insects dusted with calcium. Chahoua are enthusiastic hunters and benefit from the enrichment.
Handling and behavior
Chahoua are known for a calm, inquisitive temperament and often tolerate handling better than many arboreal geckos. Still, move slowly, support the whole body, and let them walk hand-to-hand.
They are prone to dropping their tails, so avoid grabbing and provide sturdy perches. With regular gentle handling, most Chahoua become confident, tractable adults.
